Mama Africa Comes to St. Louis, Missouri

Mama Africa
On March 1-3, The University of Missouri in St. Louis presents the 6th Annual Africa World Documentary Film Festival where they will be featuring for the first time, Mama Africa, the documentary about the legendary South African singer and activist, Miriam Makeba. In addition to the screening, there will be a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Nathan Grant, St. Louis University professor and editor of the African American Revue. Since this weekend falls on what would have been Miriam Makeba’s 81st birthday, we are introducing what can only be called “The Miriam Makeba Experience” where we pay tribute to an extraordinary woman who became the voice of Africa and its people. Miriam Makeba so embodied the spirit of Africa, she was affectionately called “Mama Africa.”
This 2011 masterpiece by Finnish filmmaker, Mika Kaurismaki is a poignant portrait of a woman who came from the townships of Johannesburg, South Africa to the world stage where she sang for kings and heads of state including United States President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
